THE RED LEAF IN MY HEART BECAME BLACK// poem by Abdul-Aziz Muhammad Inuwa

In my heart, there had been

A breath that breathed for

Long before the day opened its

Eyes. Its exhalation

And inhalation boiled, became

A steam, a heat which hands

Hardly gazed at.

The heart has now halted in hardiness,

Breathing blindly in boldness,

For all other infractions dwell

In it, they neither slipped nor

The heart,

The red leaf chewed it redness

And slid into blackness, making

My heart timid, like a new born child,

Like a pen that has never had ink.

And now, the heart of my heart

Feels that love is now a sword, a

Sword that is used to cleave hearts'

Desires — thus love shouldn't be

Emblished again; for it bites, with its

Shinny and whitish tooth.
